Filetopia aims to make life a lot easier for anyone exchanging information in real time.

To do this it combines all the key elements needed to succeed in a productive, secure and enjoyable environment, these elements are:

  1. A Collection Manager:   This lets you create lists of all the files in your collection and manage your disk files directly from that list. You can analyze your collection for duplicate files and compare it with other people's collections so as to see what you are missing or what others are missing, etc, etc.

  2. Chat Client;  The integrated chat client is aimed at helping you to find people with your same interests as you to share files with. Although it is not as loaded with features as regular IRC Clients, it provides all that is needed for an enjoyable Chat session and it has several key advantages. It uses encryption to ensure privacy; it is easy to use; it is not vulnerable to attacks of the kind seen on IRC and it is fast (text information does not travel through the server, but directly among users). Moreover everything you need to do to establish an exchange session with another user are fully automated.

  3. File Client and Server: This is tightly integrated with the rest of the system. This component is private, secure and fast. It can recover from errors, implements dynamic block sizes, retries, auto file restoring, etc. As an added bonus it is very easy to use.

  4. A Messaging System: This uses the same secure channels to post messages. Consequently there is no need to be online to participate in threads related to the channels or to send private messages to users.

All these components are combined with a core technology that provides: Encryption - for the chat and file server.
Compression (LZW) - so lists take less space and are exchanged faster.
Checksums (CRC32) - to identify duplicate files accurately.

All these features make for a highly integrated, all in one system.

The way to work with Filetopia is simple; you need to follow these steps:

  1. Use the Collection Manager to create your file collection(s) list(s). In the event that your collection is spread over several physical devices (CD-ROMs, Hard drives, a network, etc) you can make different lists for each storage unit and combine them all into a single master list.

  2. Setup your File Server so that all the files you want to share are accessible. There are other configuration parameters, which have default values, but this one has no valid default value for security reasons.

  3. Choose a Login name (your Nick inside Filetopia) and a password to make sure no one else uses it.

  4. Connect to the Filetopia Server and find a channel that suits your needs.

  5. Once there you can chat, share your list with other users, and start sharing your files at the touch of a button.

For novice users, Filetopia has a Getting Started Wizard that will guide you while configuring your system. Our wizard should get you up and running in a few minutes.
